Who we are

SOMAFPA was established by Former Graduates of Maritime & Fisheries Institute on 18th July 2019, to get solutions for the challenges facing Somali Maritime and Fishery professional who would like to come together to work and as well to pass their experience to the young generation who come in the maritime industry.

After several meetings held in Mogadishu which was participated by Former Graduates of Maritime & Fisheries Institute in Mogadishu and other parts of the country as well as abroad led by Eng. Abdirahman Mohamed Amin, head of the former institute and currently the President of the Somali Maritime & Fishery Professional Association. Our Motto is: “TOGETHER WE CAN REALIZE OUR VISION”.
From 18 July 2019, the formation in practical was taken to discuss the creation of the actual association by consensus with the Somali maritime industry sectors members.

During these meetings, a Temporary Technical Committee from different professional background appointed to work out on ways to unify Former Graduates of Maritime & Fisheries Institute in Mogadishu as well as to establish the Association. The Committee took upon its shoulders the tasks given and finally succeeded to prepare the actual Name, Logo, Letterhead, and actual profile.

The Committee were aware the expectation from the Maritime and Fishery Professionals and committed to deliver the above-mentioned task through inclusive dialogue process.

THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION

Somali Maritime & Fishery Professional Association is non-political and non-profit making association that was established in order to promote and advocate the marine sector of the country.

The Association aims to increase the involvement of SOMAFPA in the State’s public and private institutions in maritime sector by creating a platform and forum to:

  • Promote cooperation, friendship and understanding through the exchange of knowledge and the dissemination of information.
  • Unite Maritime professions as a cohesive potency for change and development.
  • Promote the maritime sector as a viable career for Professionals, by using our network in the maritime sector to give the young technicians or students opportunities for training and job.
  • Support and encourage the promotion of maritime professionalism and ethics to fight against illegal activities on the state waters and demonstrate a responsible concern for ocean preservation and safety security issue.
  • To work closely with the institutions of Somali Federal Government and Federal Members States including but one limited to Ministries of Marine Transport and Ports, Fisheries and Marine Resources and its protection, Energy & Environment, Petroleum & Mining as well as other regional and international organizations engaged in the marine sector.
  • To encourage the committee to double their efforts for the preparation of national professional meeting.

Our Objectives

One of the main objrctives of SOMAFPA is to careate a platform where Former Graduates of Maritime & Fisheries Institute living in all corner of the world could easily exchange information and ideas. A think tank devoted to the reform of marine and fisheries studies and maritime industry integration to Somali policy.

Vision

SOMAFPA to be a leading Association among the Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations engaging in the sectors of Marine Transport, Ports, Fisheries and Protection of Marine Environment and Resources organizations in Somalia and the region as a whole.

Mission

The SOMAFPA is to create a national network for Maritime Professionals, to provide maritime quality services, education, research and consultancy. As well as to address potential maritime safety and security to protect marine environmental threats. To achieve economically, socially and environmentally sustainable fisheries that contribute to better living standard for all Somalis.
